Safeguarding

Promoting a Safer Church

Our vision

The vision statement of Paignton Baptist Church is.
As a loving community of worshippers focusing on Jesus, we aspire to be a safe place where everyone regardless of age, gender, faith, ethnicity, or ability and especially children, young people, and adults at risk know that they are welcome and valued at any time.

In fulfilling this vision we:
  • Welcome children, young people and adults at risk into the life of our church.
  • Run activities that children, young people and adults at risk can attend.
  • Make our premises available to organisations working with children, young people and adults at risk.

Our safeguarding responsibilities

The church recognises its responsibilities in safeguarding all children, young people and adults at risk, regardless of gender, ethnicity or ability.

As members of this church we commit ourselves to the nurturing, protection and safekeeping of all associated with the church and will pray for them regularly. In pursuit of this, we commit ourselves to this policy and to the development of sound procedures to ensure we implement our policy well.

Prevention and reporting of abuse

It is the duty of each church member to help prevent the abuse of children, young people and adults at risk, and the duty of each church member to respond to concerns about the well-being of children, young people and adults at risk. Any abuse disclosed, discovered or suspected will be reported in accordance with our procedures. The church will fully co-operate with any statutory investigation into any suspected abuse linked with the church.

Safer recruitment, support and supervision of workers

The church will exercise proper care in the selection and appointment of those working with children, young people and adults at risk, whether paid or voluntary. All workers will be provided with appropriate training, support and supervision to promote the safekeeping of children and adults at risk.

Respecting children and adults at risk

The church will adopt a code of behaviour for all who are appointed to work with children and adults at risk so that all children and adults are shown the respect that is due to them.

Safer working practices

The church is committed to providing an environment that is as safe as possible for children, young people, and adults at risk and will adopt ways of working with them that promote and maintain their safety and well-being. Therefore, where necessary, there will be a request that those people (church members or otherwise) who have a diagnosed mental illness and/or complex medical needs, may only attend church activities if they bring designated 1:1 support.

A safer community

The church is committed to the prevention of bullying. The church will seek to ensure that the behaviour of any individuals who may pose a risk to anyone, especially children, young people and adults at risk in the community of the church is managed appropriately.

However, each person has a responsibility to report allegations of abuse as soon as they are raised.

Further definitions of these roles can be found in our full policy document (Appendix 4 – Safeguarding Roles and Responsibilities)

Putting our policy into practice

  1. A copy of the safeguarding policy statement will be displayed permanently on the church noticeboard and church office and is available on our church website.
  2. Each worker with children and/or adults at risk will be given a full copy of the safeguarding policy and procedures and will be asked to sign to confirm that they will follow them.
  3. A full copy of the policy and procedures will be made available on request to any member of, or other person associated with the church.
  4. The policy and procedures will be monitored and reviewed annually, and any necessary revisions adopted into the policy and implemented through our procedures.

Planning your Visit

A Warm Welcome

People in a church service

The following information is specifically for those planning a visit, so that you know, beforehand, what to expect on a Sunday morning.

Where and When

We meet at the Church building (map) for our Sunday Service starting at 10:30am. For your first visit, we recommend arriving 10-15 minutes early to ensure you get a parking space and find somewhere to sit before the service begins. When you arrive, you should be greeted by someone on our Welcome Team who will be at the front door.

We serve free tea, coffee and biscuits after the service, so do stay and say hello. It is a great way to meet people and get your bearings.

Accessibility: There is wheelchair access, and a sound loop for anyone who needs it. Please let one of the Welcome Team know on your arrival and they will help you to get set up. There are disabled toilets just off the main foyer.

Our Service

The main service begins at 10.30am with a warm welcome from one of our team members, who will share news and notices about what’s going on in the life of the church. Then follows a time of sung worship, led by our music team. We typically have 3 or 4 songs lasting approximately 20 minutes. Sometimes a person might pray out loud or read a small passage from the bible. People may also share things that they believe God is saying to the whole church family, as well as sharing how God has been working in their lives over the past week. This might seem strange the first time you hear it but it’s all part of our connecting with God. One of our teaching team will then give a sermon that is bible based and that we can apply to our everyday life. After allowing a time for the congregation to reflect and respond. We then finish with a final worship song or two. There is always an opportunity to pray with a member of the Prayer Ministry team at the end of the service.

What about my children?

We have a great programme lined up for kids of all ages:

  • Creche (0 months to 2 years) - A dedicated area at the rear of the church
  • Children’s Church (3-12 years) - See below for details
  • Young people (13+ years) - Stay in main service

Children stay with their parent or grown-up at the start of the service for the welcome, songs and notices. We really value worshipping God all together as a family. After 20 minutes or so, someone will announce that it’s time for them to go to their groups.

The children's group activities vary depending on the age but usually there are bible stories, testimonies, prayers, music, craft, drama, fun games and free play. Your children will be brought back to the main church as soon as the service finishes.

Getting Connected

Life Groups

While Sundays are a great way to meet new people, it is often in smaller gatherings that you can really get to know someone. Being part of one of our Life Groups allows you to make new friends, share together and support each other. We have a variety of groups that meet throughout the week, some afternoons and some evenings. Check out Life Groups and see if there’s one that you could join, or we can put you in touch with a group leader who will be more than happy to invite you along to their group.
