Christmas 2018

Here at Paignton Baptist Church, it's that time of year again. December is coming with all the joys of Christmas. But what is the real meaning of Christmas? Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of the Jesus Christ. God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to be born. His birth brought great joy to the world. Shepherds, wise men, and angels all shared in the excitement of knowing about this great event. They knew this was no ordinary baby. The prophets had told of His coming hundreds of years before. The star stopped over Bethlehem just to mark the way for those who were looking for this special child.

The following are special events for the Christmas season, but please see the Calendar for other services.

Sunday 2nd December 2018.  3pm  United Advent Service

The start of the Christmas Season is Advent, which begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day, the sunday nearest to November 30, and ends on Christmas Eve. Advent means: "Arrival" or "Coming", Christmas focuses on the birth of Jesus Christ (the first Advent), and the anticipation of the Second Advent, when Jesus Christ returns. This is a united service with the other churches in Paignton, organised by Christians Together in Paignton, and will be held at the Salvation Army Citadel, Princes Street. There will be no service at Winner Street at 6.30 pm

Saturday 8th December 2018. 2 pm  Carol Singing

Wednesday 19th December 2018. 6.30 pm Carol Singing

Join us and the other central Paignton churches in singing carols around our local streets, meeting at our church at 6.30 pm. What could be more traditional at Christmas than carol singing in the streets? Some of our favorite carols started as seasonal songs to be sung out doors by the "waits", such as "God rest you merry, gentlemen" and "The first Nowell". We will not be collecting money, but we will be giving out news of God's love, and details of local Christmas services with warm invitations, plus a few sweets.

Friday 21st December 2018. 10.30 am  Coffee morning with carols

Our usual coffee morning will be on, with FREE coffee, tea and biscuits, but in addition we invite all present to join in some favorite carols to get you in tune for a very happy Christmas.

Sunday 23rd December 2018. 10.30 am  Christmas All-Age worship and Brigades service

In a special service especially suitable for children as well as adults, we will be celebrating the coming of Jesus - God with us! All Boys' Brigade and Girls' Brigade members are particularly asked to attend, although uniforms will not be required this time, and asked to bring their parents too.

Sunday 23th December 2018. 6:30pm  Paignton Baptist Church Carol Service.

Join us for our traditional Carol Service which consists of hymns about Christmas (Carols) and readings from the gospels telling the Christmas story. The Church will be decorated by candles and Christmas lights, adding to the festive night time feel.

Tuesday 25th December 2018. 10:00am  Christmas Morning Service.

God set into motion the salvation of all humanity. The virgin conceived and bore a Son. he was named Jesus...Emmanuel...God With Us... the Word made flesh which dwells among us. Rejoice and be glad! Paignton Baptist Church celebrates the birth of the baby Jesus, Saviour of the world. Come and celebrate with us.

"....And is it true? For if it is,   No loving fingers tying strings   Around those tissued fripperies,   The sweet and silly Christmas things,  Bath salts and inexpensive scent   And hideous tie so kindly meant,

No love that in a family dwells,   No carolling in frosty air,   Nor all the steeple-shaking bells   Can with this single Truth compare -   That God was Man in Palestine   And lives today in Bread and Wine."                                                                                                                                                                            - John Betjeman

Sunday 30th December 2018: 10.30 am  Morning Worship

Christmas is traditionally celebrated for 12 days (On the first day of  Christmas my true gave to me....) so continue in the spirit of the festive season with this morning service.

Monday 31st December 2018. 7:30pm  New Year's Eve Party and Watch Night Service.

Paignton Baptist Church holds a Watch Night Service starting at 11.30 pm on New Year's Eve and concluding in the New Year at a few minutes past midnight. A Watch Night Service is a religious observance held on the last night of the year, December 31, often ending at midnight to begin the New year. It is traditionally a time of giving thanks for the old year and making new commitments for the new year.

Before this, there will be a party, with games, food (please bring a contribution), a sing song and possibly a bit of barn dance style tradional dancing. Come along and bring your friends and relations - the more, the merrier - there's never anything on the telly anyway!

Sunday 6th January 2019. 10:30am Epiphany.

Epiphany is the climax of the Advent-Christmas Season and the Twelve Days of Christmas, which are usually counted from the evening of December 25th until the morning of January 6th, which is the Twelfth Day. In following this older custom of counting the days beginning at sundown, the evening of January 5th is the Twelfth Night. Sunday 6th is the nearest Sunday to this. In addition, the service will conclude with the first Communion of the New Year.

During the month of December there are other events both in the church and outside the Church, celebrating the Christmas message. The Woman's fellowship, the Boys' Brigade and House Groups will be having their own individual celebrations. Check out the Calendar for further details:
